Jurgen Klopp’s side are believed to have identified the 21-year-old defender as a possible signing in the upcoming transfer window, even though Leipzig’s sporting director Markus Krosche recently played down talk of a switch to Merseyside.
Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that the Bavarians are set on the verge of completing a deal to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, according to Sky Sports News.
The 22-year-old is one of the most sought-after centre-backs in world football, with a number of elite clubs interested in acquiring his services.
The 22-year-old defender was strongly linked with both Liverpool and Manchester United last year but the Frenchman remained with the Bundesliga giants at the end of July.
Upamecano’s contract has a release clause of £40m, though, and Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff recently hinted that the centre-back could soon be on the move.
The 20-year-old, who is said to be valued at £25m, has established himself as first-choice defender at the Veltins-Arena but has been unable to prevent club’s slump to the bottom of the league table this term.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United won’t be pursuing the services of Bayern Munich defender David Alaba due to the player’s significant wage demands. The Austria international has spent his entire career with the Bavarian giants, but could be on the move in six months’ time when his contract expires.
