Does A Man United Move for Bale Make Sense?

As the summer transfer window rumour mill slowly kicks into life like a theme park attraction juddering into action after a period of inactivity, much of the talk surrounds the fates of two players tipped to travel in opposite directions: David De Gea and Gareth Bale.

The speculation that De Gea has already told United chiefs that he wants to return to his homeland with the Spanish giants refuses to go away. And after a tough end to the season in which he was roundly booed by his own supporters, it is rumoured that Bale is ready to call time on his Spanish expedition to return to England with Manchester United in a swap deal.

Is there any mileage in the Gareth Bale to Manchester United rumour that refuses to go away? The former Spurs player was sold to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 but only after a last-minute bid by Manchester United failed.

David Moyes the then manager at Old Trafford had a notoriously unsuccessful transfer window and, having failed to land Cesc Fabregas and Cristiano Ronaldo, tried to hijack the deal that would take Bale to the Bernebeu. The Welshman was however intent on a move to Spain and has had a successful first year with his new team, winning the Champions League at the end of last season, beating Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid in the final.
