Chelsea Lead Race for Mike Maignan
Chelsea have emerged as the leading contenders to secure AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, with reports from Ekrem Konur suggesting the Blues are firmly in pole position for the French international’s signature.
The 29-year-old has been nothing short of sensational since swapping Lille for the San Siro in 2021. After an outstanding final season in Ligue 1—where he registered 21 clean sheets and helped Les Dogues lift the title—Maignan hit the ground running in Italy, claiming the Serie A crown in his debut campaign and adding the Italian Super Cup to his trophy cabinet last season.
Chelsea Reignite Transfer Interest
The West London outfit initially tested the waters last summer, but negotiations collapsed over Milan’s hefty valuation. Now, with Maignan’s contract expiring in summer 2026, Enzo Maresca’s side have reignited their pursuit and are reportedly ready to make their move—potentially as early as January.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has been streamlined considerably. Having inherited five senior stoppers, Maresca now works with just Robert Sánchez, Filip Jørgensen, and Gabriel Slonina in the first-team setup.
Can Maignan Elevate Chelsea’s Defence?
Sánchez has enjoyed a renaissance this season, earning November’s PFA Fans’ Player of the Month after three clean sheets and just one goal conceded. His distribution has improved markedly too, with FotMob crediting him with a 67.1% pass accuracy, 92 accurate long balls, and 25 high claims—among the Premier League’s finest.
Yet Maignan’s numbers tell an even more compelling story. The commanding 6ft 3in shot-stopper boasts 37 saves with a superior 77.1% save percentage, compared to Sánchez’s 31 saves at 70.5%. While his high claims don’t quite match the Spaniard’s, Maignan’s 74.4% distribution rating proves he’s got the technical quality to thrive in Maresca’s possession-based system.
With a reported £21m Transfermarkt valuation and his contract ticking down, Chelsea face a critical decision: strike in January or risk a summer bidding war for one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers.
