Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has signed a new long-term contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2019, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old England international, whose previous deal was due to expire in 2016 has been rewarded with a new contract for his improved form this season, scoring four goals – better than any other United defender.

United manager Louis van Gaal said: “Chris has improved and developed immensely during the short time that I have been at the club and has become an integral part of the first-team squad. I am delighted he has signed a new contract.”

The centre-back joined the Red Devils from Fulham in 2010 and has won two Premier League titles at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal is expected to sign another centre-back this summer, with Dortmund’s Mats Hummels is the favourite to arrive at the Theatre of Dreams.
